Seven Safety Habits Beyond BBS – A Cultural Safety Program
Wilson Bateman, President, Global Training Edge Inc.
Culture is all about our beliefs, practices, and habits. Strong safety habits are required to build a strong safety culture. The 7 Safety Habits That Could Save Your Life will help you improve your safety culture by evaluating these habits. In this course we will discuss habits at work, on the road, and at home, because we firmly believe that in order to impact our safety culture we need to focus on all aspects of life. The 7 Safety Habits That Could Save Your Life is a fun, refreshing new way of looking at safety. Our safety habits (safety culture) are created over time like building a house. Several stages are involved
- The foundation – The Awareness Level
- The walls go up – The Participation Level
- The roof – The Safety Conscious Level.
We look at safety habits using this model asking the participants to evaluate their habits to identify those that protect and those that sometime place a person in harm’s way. We also ask that participants take the program home and share the concepts with friends and family members. This helps to strengthen Habit Number 4: Send the Message. Our philosophy is no matter what you do you send a message. What message will you send at work and at home? Benefits for attendees
- Focus on safety habits helping to build a strong safety culture
- Identify good safety habits
- Identify bad habits
- Plan to correct
- On and off the job application
- Help to improve the safety culture
- Tools that can be used outside the classroom
- Reduced incidents on and off the job.

OHSAS 18001:2007 and the Role of Management
Khurshed Kutky, Certification Manager, OH&S Management Systems, QMI-SAI Global
This course will cover the main requirements of the OHSAS 18001:2007 standard with particular emphasis on the role of management in driving the implementation of OH&S policies in the workplace. It will also identify the correspondence between OHSAS 18001:2007 requirements and the Canadian National Standard for OH&S management, CAN/CSA Z1000- 06.
Organizations often do not realize the magnitude of the direct and indirect costs of workplace injuries and ill health. The cost of time away from work, health care costs, the resultant loss of production, hiring of temporary staff, work errors by replacement employees, workplace insurance premiums, surcharges, penalties and the associated administrative and social costs can be considerable. The effective implementation of a structured health and safety management system based on standards such as OHSAS 18001:2007 or CAN/CSA Z1000-06 can reduce risk, improve OH&S performance and provide operational, financial and other benefits to organizations.
Attendees will learn the steps that an organization can take to implement an OHSMS, with particular emphasis on the importance of ongoing hazard identification and risk assessment processes, as well as the associated operational control measures. It will also reinforce the importance of having effective management leadership and worker participation in the development and maintenance of the OHSMS. The application of key requirements of the standard will be explained with examples, and will show how an OHSMS can be an effective tool in helping you to make your workplace safer, reduce injuries, illnesses and fatalities, and improve overall OHS performance.
